As Mother’s Day 2014 was fast approaching, I started thinking about what it means to be a working mom.
I thought about the trials that we experience getting our little ones ready for daycare or grandma’s care and getting ourselves ready and out the door. I thought about the strength that countless mothers exude to work past the tiredness and to keep going even when the work day is done.
I have to admit, when I first pondered the prospect of being a working mother, one who has embarked upon starting a new business, it was a little scary. Okay it was ‘alot’ scary and it still is.
My greatest concern was and still is having the ability to dedicate my time equally to the most important thing in my life and to my business.
Since success is the only option I have given myself, I asked myself the questions that countless mothers have asked.
What do I need to do to be a great Mom and be a successful entrepreneur?
What do I need to do so that I can have a win in each column?
What do I need to do to keep fired me up to work until late and then get up early to go again?
Here are the answers that I have gotten so far and the answers that I am sure many mothers have known and been practicing for decades.
Get organised and stay organised!
Get Committed and stay committed!
I don’t mean the regular run of the mill, day to day organization, I mean the hardcore white board list, calendar smartphone notifications for anything and everything, planning your week type of organization. Bearing in mind that not everything can go your way so build in options into your routine, backup plans, so that you are mentally flexible to make changes on short notice and finally heaps and heaps of commitment towards your goals.
Why? Because structure is awesome when it comes to getting the job done, Flexibility is absolutely necessary to deal with challenges from the world outside that isn’t aligned with your well laid plans and commitment is crucial to fuel the creativity in your mind, body and soul.
I have accepted that both these wonderful and challenging aspects of my life are important to me, one more so than the other and no need to guess which one. But nonetheless, they are both in the infant stage and both need the dedication and time in order to grow and become success stories.
Through my actions, thoughts and disposition, I need to breathe life into my role as a mother and as an entrepreneur, embrace them excitedly and fully and get to working towards becoming an awesome mom and successful entrepreneur.
Happy Mother’s Day to all the Moms, Aunts, Grandmothers, Godmothers, Daycare providers, and all the other persons who provide that nurturing care to our nation’s children and allow mother’s like me the opportunity pursue life with vigor and enthusiasm.
Happy Mother’s Day!
